Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

PID is a bacterial infection of the upper genital tract that originates from the lower. Usually it is a result of a sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Signs and Symptoms
  • can range from very mild to very severe
  • lower abdominal tenderness
  • fever
  • painful intercourse 
  • abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge 
  • amenorrhea 
Management
  • consult a medical professional
  • cease sexual contact until treatment is complete
  • usually requires hospitalization 
  • antibacterial medication is needed
Prevention
  • normal STD prevention such as condoms, discretion with partner selection, and abstinence 
  • IUDs and douching may increase risk
