PID is a bacterial infection of the upper genital tract that originates from the lower. Usually it is a result of a sexually transmitted infection such as
chlamydia and
gonorrhea.
Signs and Symptoms
- can range from very mild to very severe
- lower abdominal tenderness
- fever
- painful intercourse
- abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
- amenorrhea
Management
- consult a medical professional
- cease sexual contact until treatment is complete
- usually requires hospitalization
- antibacterial medication is needed
Prevention
- normal STD prevention such as condoms, discretion with partner selection, and abstinence
- IUDs and douching may increase risk
